Talk Football. That’s right, I was sitting around a bunch of teenaged boys who adore football the other week and dazzled them with my impressive depth of knowledge. I was rattling off quarterback’s names, records, and match-ups. I held court for a seeming eternity discussing Drew Brees and the Saints, Tim Tebow and the Broncos, Tom Brady and the Patriots, and Eli Manning and the Giants. At one point my husband looked over at me with incredulous eyes and just shook his head and smiled. He asks me later, “How do you know all of that?” to which I answer, “Who am I?” and he says knowingly, “Chief 187™ and you know everything.” As for why I was talking to teenaged boys, that is none of your business.
Believe in Tebow. Yes, I know his dream run is over for this season and I understand he isn’t
all that and a bag of chips (is that still a cool saying?), but I witnessed something fantastical this season. Tim Tebow brought hope, enthusiasm, and cheers back to Denver. My grandmother was a longtime Broncos fan having lived in Englewood, Colorado for a large part of her adult life. She was a good fan and watched the games. She passed in 1991. On her behalf I still root for the Broncos and this year was so happy that her team was in the news so much. So what if Tebow doesn’t fit the cloth of a traditional “good” quarterback? Who cares if his claim of being a virgin is far-fetched or odd to some? Why is his strong faith under so much derision? The boy has courage in his convictions, lives his life without apologies, and made the game memorable for diehard and casual fans alike. Cheers to Tim Tebow. I’m so happy to have been around broadcasting when this boy was in his heyday!
Play-off Games. As I’ve stated before, I have always watched and enjoyed watching the Super Bowl. I had always heard, though, that Play-off Games are usually far better than the Super Bowl itself. This year, on purpose, the television was on during the Play-Off games and I was watching, feeling as though I had a vested interest. Surrounded by Giants fans living in my native New Jersey, it was a thrill to see them win recently. Can they go all the way? I honestly don’t know, but this season has taught me to expect the unexpected. If the defending Super Bowl Champions Green Bay Packers could fall to the Giants then anything can happen. I just know that this year’s Super Bowl will be extra sweet because of what I’ve learned in the past year.
WhooBazoo Boys Know Football. I have had the privilege and the honor to work an entire year with some of the most amazing sports fans in the country. They have teased me, ruffed me up, and nearly abused me, but they have taught me so very much. I am more than looking forward to a new year, a new season, and more insight into America’s love affair with football.
With football season ending soon we can start to get back to what is truly important, NASCAR. I’ve paid my respects to football, learned what I can and will continue to glean information about the sport, but now it is time for you all to take the step into the world of NASCAR. We’ve got forty-three drivers, thirty-six points races, All-Star events, and Danica Patrick. Each week I write a NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Recap and each week on “Around the Cooler” the boys and I talk about NASCAR. Start watching, listening, and reading and then call us up to talk NASCAR. You’ll be glad you did.
